Video SEO: Get Your Videos Indexed in Google With VideoObject Markup

Intermediate Medium impact A few hours Images, video and audio

Updated · First published

Short answerGoogle indexes a video only when it sits on an indexed watch page whose main purpose is that one video, with a valid thumbnail and a fetchable file. Add VideoObject markup (name, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate), a video sitemap for bigger libraries, and check the Video indexing report.

Video SEO is the work that gets your videos found, indexed and shown in Google’s video results, with thumbnails, jump-to-moment links and a LIVE badge where they apply. It covers the page the video sits on, the markup that describes it, the file and thumbnail Google must reach, and the reports that show whether it worked.

What is video SEO?

Google treats a video as a separate item attached to a page. Three URLs matter, and Google’s documentation names each:

  • Watch page: the page that shows the video. It goes in the <loc> of a video sitemap.
  • Player: the embedded player, in embedUrl or <video:player_loc>.
  • Video file: the actual file, in contentUrl or <video:content_loc>.

Google can then show the video in Search results, the Videos tab, Google Images and Discover.

Why does video SEO matter?

A video result takes more screen space than a text link and shows a thumbnail, which draws the eye. Pages that answer “how to” questions suit video, and a video result next to your page gives you a second listing on the results page. Google also shows labelled segments of a video with jump links (Google calls them key moments), so users land on the exact second they need.

There is a catch that surprises many sites. Google says a watch page must have the video as its main purpose. A blog post or product page with a video embedded does not count as a watch page, although it can still appear as a normal text result. Google also says an indexed watch page does not guarantee the video itself gets indexed.

What does Google require before it indexes a video?

Requirement Rule from Google’s documentation
Watch page Indexed, and a page whose main purpose is to show one video
Visibility Video embedded on the page, not hidden behind other elements
Thumbnail Valid image at a stable URL; formats BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG or AVIF; at least 60 by 30 pixels; fetchable by Googlebot
Video file Supported type such as MP4, WebM, M3U8 or MOV, at a stable URL; data URLs are not supported
Access Not blocked by robots.txt, noindex or a login

Paywalled videos need paywall structured data.

How do you do video SEO, step by step?

  1. Give important videos their own page. One video per page, with a title, a description and a transcript in HTML. Videos that only support a blog post can stay embedded.
  2. Pick the host. YouTube gives reach (see YouTube SEO). Self-hosting or a host such as Wistia or Mux keeps the traffic and the markup on your page. Embedding a YouTube video on your own watch page works too.
  3. Prepare the thumbnail. One unique, clear image per video, at a stable URL, and the same URL everywhere you declare it (sitemap, markup, og:video:image).
  4. Add VideoObject structured data. Required: name, thumbnailUrl, uploadDate with a timezone. Recommended: description, duration, contentUrl, embedUrl. Keep it consistent with the visible video:
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "VideoObject",
  "name": "How to feed a sourdough starter",
  "description": "A 6 minute walkthrough of a daily feeding routine.",
  "thumbnailUrl": "https://example.com/img/starter-thumb.jpg",
  "uploadDate": "2026-10-20T08:00:00+01:00",
  "duration": "PT6M10S",
  "contentUrl": "https://example.com/video/starter.mp4",
  "embedUrl": "https://example.com/embed/starter"
}

Skip expires unless the video really expires: a date in the past hides the video. 5. Add key moments. For your own videos use Clip markup with name, startOffset and url (the same page with a time parameter). Google says the video must be at least 30 seconds long and each clip needs a different start time. SeekToAction lets Google find moments itself but works in a limited set of languages. For YouTube videos, timestamps in the description work in all Search languages. 6. Build a video sitemap for larger libraries. It uses <video:thumbnail_loc>, <video:player_loc> or <video:content_loc> per video. Use it with the normal XML sitemap setup. For pictures see image sitemaps. 7. Mark live streams. BroadcastEvent with isLiveBroadcast, startDate and endDate earns the red LIVE badge. Google notes the Indexing API supports only livestream pages for this. 8. Test and submit. Check the page in the Rich Results Test, submit the sitemap, and request indexing of the watch page in Search Console.

How do you measure the result?

  • Video indexing report (Search Console): lists watch pages with an indexed video, and why others are not indexed.
  • Video rich result report: shows VideoObject errors.
  • Performance report: filter by the “Videos” search appearance to see clicks and impressions.
  • Page level: a page indexing report check on the watch page itself, since an unindexed page cannot give you an indexed video.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Expecting every blog post with an embed to show a video result. Only watch pages qualify.
  • Hiding the video behind a click-through pop-up, a login or a lazy-load that Google cannot trigger.
  • Blocking the video file or thumbnail in robots.txt.
  • Reusing one thumbnail, name or description across videos. Each needs its own.
  • Markup that does not match the page. Keep the title, duration and description the same as what viewers see. More in structured data.
  • No transcript. Text on the page gives Google, and people who cannot play sound, something to read. The podcast SEO page uses the same idea for audio.
