Podcast SEO: Episode Pages, Transcripts and Feeds That Get Found

Intermediate Low impact Ongoing Images, video and audio

Updated · First published

Short answerSearch engines cannot listen, so a podcast ranks through text: a dedicated page per episode with a title, summary, show notes and full transcript, plus a clean RSS feed in Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube Music. Google Podcasts shut down in 2024.

Podcast SEO is the work of making a podcast discoverable in search engines and in podcast directories. Search engines read text, not sound, so an episode that exists only as an audio file in an app gives Google almost nothing to index. The method is to put every episode on a web page with real text, and to keep the feed that directories read in good order.

What is podcast SEO?

Two separate systems find your show:

  • Web search. Google and Bing index your episode pages. They match a query to your title, summary, show notes and transcript.
  • Directory search. Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube Music search your feed data: show title, episode titles, descriptions and category.

You have to serve both. Google Podcasts, which once did both jobs on Android, shut down in 2024 (April 2, 2024 in the US), and Google moved podcast listening to YouTube Music. A show now needs to reach Google through its web pages and YouTube.

Why does it matter?

An audio file is a closed box to a crawler. A transcript turns an hour of speech into thousands of words that match the long-tail questions a guest answers aloud. Say you interview a bookkeeper about invoicing late-paying clients: the transcript can rank for “how to chase a late invoice”, and the audio cannot. A transcript also makes the episode usable for deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors and for people reading at their desk.

The honest limit: podcast SEO rarely moves a business alone. The impact is Low for most startups, and it grows when the show feeds a content distribution routine or podcast guesting (being a guest on other shows) brings in new listeners.

How do you do podcast SEO, step by step?

  1. Give every episode its own page. Not one page that lists all episodes. Each page has a unique URL, a title with the topic in plain words, an audio player and 150 to 300 words of summary.
  2. Write a title for the search query. Start with what the episode is about, then the guest or the show name. Follow the habits from title tags: one topic, no stuffing.
  3. Publish the full transcript. Put it in HTML on the episode page, not in a PDF or an image. Clean the text, label the speakers and add a heading for each topic change.
  4. Add show notes with links. Link the guest’s site, the sources mentioned and your own related pages. Add timestamps for each topic.
  5. Supply the transcript to the directories too. Apple Podcasts shows transcripts on iOS 17.4 and later, in a list of supported languages that Apple maintains. You can upload your own VTT or SRT file in Apple Podcasts Connect, or link it in your RSS feed with the podcast:transcript tag. Many hosts do this for you.
  6. Keep the feed clean. Fill in the show title, description, language, category and cover art, and use a host that follows the Apple and Spotify specs. Apple recommends AAC over MP3, and gives target bit rates and loudness of about -16 LKFS for the audio file.
  7. Submit once to every directory. Apple Podcasts Connect, Spotify for Creators and YouTube Music. Use one feed, so reviews and plays stay in one place.
  8. Publish a video version when you can. Upload the audio as video or a recording of the conversation to YouTube (see YouTube SEO and video SEO), which is where Google moved its podcast listening.
  9. Consider structured data. Schema.org has PodcastEpisode and PodcastSeries. Google’s structured data gallery lists no podcast rich result that I could confirm, so treat the markup as optional labelling (see structured data).

How do you measure the result?

  • Search Console, Performance report: filter to your episode URLs and watch impressions and clicks for the query terms that match your transcripts.
  • Podcast host and directory analytics: plays and followers per episode. Apple Podcasts Connect and Spotify for Creators show listener counts and drop-off.
  • YouTube Studio: watch time on the video version.
  • Referral traffic: use a short, memorable URL spoken in the episode and read it in your analytics to see who came from listening.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Raw machine transcripts. Unedited speech-to-text has wrong names and no speaker labels, and reads poorly. Edit before publishing.
  • One page for the whole feed. A single archive page gives you one result instead of one per episode.
  • Hiding the transcript behind a login, a tab that loads late or an image.
  • Changing the feed address without a redirect, which splits your listeners and reviews.
  • Vague episode titles such as “Episode 41”. Use the topic.
  • Treating the app as the website. The directories can change, as Google Podcasts showed. Your own site is the one thing you keep.

Where can you learn more?

Apple’s podcaster support pages cover audio requirements and transcripts, and your host’s help center covers feed settings. The free digital marketing module of the Fe/male Switch startup school covers the web SEO your episode pages need. Next steps: pick your three best episodes, give each a page with a transcript, and look at the impressions in Search Console after a month.

Earlier versions of this directory listed this as: Audio content optimization.
