Perplexity citations are the numbered source links that Perplexity’s answer engine places beside each statement it writes. Every answer shows where the information came from, so a citation is both a trust signal and a click. Getting cited starts with letting Perplexity’s crawler read your pages.
What are Perplexity citations and who decides them?
Perplexity searches the web for each question, reads the pages it finds and writes an answer with inline numbered markers that map to source links. Perplexity publishes no ranking formula for those sources, and no third party sees inside it. What you can control is access, page quality and how quotable your content is.
Perplexity’s documentation names two user agents:
| Bot | Purpose | robots.txt behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity search results. Perplexity says it is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models | Follows robots.txt. Allow it to appear in results |
| Perplexity-User | Fetches a page when a user’s question needs it, then links it in the response. Not used for general crawling or training data | Because a person requested the fetch, it generally ignores robots.txt |
The IP ranges are published at perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json and perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json.
Why do Perplexity citations matter?
Perplexity answers carry visible links, and its users are people researching a decision. A citation puts your brand in that research moment. On top of that, a page that earns citations is clear, sourced and specific, which also helps in Google’s AI features and ChatGPT search.
How do you get cited in Perplexity, step by step?
- Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt. Add:
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
- Allow it at the firewall. Perplexity’s docs recommend letting through requests that match both the user-agent string and the published IP ranges. In Cloudflare or AWS WAF, create an Allow rule, keep the IP lists updated from the JSON files, and watch your logs after the change.
- Wait up to 24 hours. Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take that long to apply. Settings for each bot are independent.
- Write the answer first. Open each section with a direct, self-contained answer to the question in its heading. See answer-first content.
- Add facts with named sources. In the 2024 GEO paper (KDD 2024), adding citations, quotations and statistics gave the strongest gains, and keyword stuffing scored 10 percent below the baseline on Perplexity.ai. Details: statistics and quotes.
- Publish original data. A survey, benchmark or price comparison that no other page has gives Perplexity a reason to cite you instead of a larger site. Try original research.
- Answer questions in public forums too. Forum threads are public web pages that a search crawler can read, so honest, useful answers there can add another page that mentions your brand (Reddit and forums).
- Keep the page readable by a bot. Main text in plain HTML, no login wall, fast server response.
How do you measure Perplexity visibility?
- Server logs. Filter for
PerplexityBotandPerplexity-Userin the user-agent field. A crawl proves you are eligible. A Perplexity-User hit shows a person’s question just touched your page. - Analytics. Add a GA4 report on session source containing
perplexity. Referral traffic is small for most sites, so compare month to month. - Prompt checks. Keep a list of 20 to 50 questions your customers ask. Run them in Perplexity monthly and record whether your domain is cited and which competitors are. See AI visibility tracking.
Answers change between runs, so repeat each prompt a few times before you draw a conclusion.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- A global
User-agent: *block that was meant for scrapers and also shuts out PerplexityBot. - Allowing it in robots.txt but blocking it in the firewall. Both layers need to agree.
- Believing “Perplexity SEO” tools that claim insider ranking data. Perplexity publishes none.
- Relying on robots.txt to stop Perplexity-User. Perplexity says it generally ignores those rules for user-requested fetches.
- Spoofable user agents. Verify bot traffic against the published IP files before you whitelist anything wide.
- Stuffing keywords or padding text. The GEO paper found it lowered visibility.
