Tracking AI citations means measuring how frequently AI answers in Google, Bing Copilot, ChatGPT and Perplexity show your pages as a source or name your brand. No single dashboard covers all of them, so you combine two official reports, your analytics and a small, repeatable test.
What counts as an AI citation?
Three things get lumped together, and you track them differently:
- A citation: your URL appears as a source link or footnote in an AI answer.
- A mention: the answer names your brand or product with no link.
- A referral: someone clicks through and lands on your site, which analytics records.
Citations and mentions build awareness even with no click, and that is why impressions-style reports matter alongside traffic.
Why does it matter?
AI answers sit above or beside classic results, and some users never click a blue link. If you only watch rankings and organic sessions, you miss part of the picture. Also, the numbers are small today for most small sites, so measure early to learn which pages get picked and what they have in common.
Be honest about the limits. AI answers vary between runs, between users and between days. Any single check is a sample, not a rank.
Which free reports show AI visibility?
| Source | What it shows | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console: Generative AI performance report (launched June 2026) | Impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover generative features, by page, country, device (Search) and date | Google is rolling it out to a subset of sites, so you may not see it yet. AI data also feeds the overall performance report |
| Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance report (public preview since February 2026) | Citations of your pages in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and partner integrations, such as total citations and cited pages | Needs a verified site. Preview metrics can change |
| GA4 referral traffic | Visits from AI tools | Sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com and claude.ai show up as referrers when the tool passes them |
| Your own prompt test | Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot cite you for your main questions | Free, repeatable, and the only view of tools that publish no report |
How do you track AI citations, step by step?
- Verify your site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Both are free. Bing can import a site from Search Console (see Google Search Console and Bing and Copilot).
- Open the AI reports weekly for a month, then monthly. In Search Console, go to the Generative AI performance report and note impressions by page. In Bing, open AI Performance and export the page-level numbers. Save a dated copy, because history in preview reports can change.
- Build an AI referral view in GA4. Open Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, add a filter on Session source that contains
chatgpt, perplexity, copilot, geminiorclaude, and save it as a custom report. Setup details are in GA4 setup. Some AI visits arrive with no referrer and land in Direct, so the count is a floor. - Write a prompt list of 20. Cover your brand name, your category (“best accounting software for freelancers”), your comparison queries and the questions your pages answer. Use plain language as a customer would.
- Run the list monthly in each tool. Use a logged-out browser or a fresh session, the same wording and the same country. Record in a spreadsheet: date, tool, prompt, cited yes or no, which URL, which competitors appear, and whether the facts about you are correct.
- Run each prompt 3 times. Answers change run to run. Report “cited in 2 of 3 runs”, not a single yes or no.
- Tag wins and wrong answers. Pages that get cited tell you what format works for your topic. Wrong facts about your brand tell you which page needs a clearer statement (see answer-first content).
- Add one line to your monthly report. AI impressions, citations, AI referrals and prompt-test share go next to organic clicks (see SEO reporting).
Are paid AI visibility trackers worth it?
They save time once you track hundreds of prompts, and they show competitors. Their weak points are the same as your own sampling: they query the tools through scripted sessions that do not match real users’ personalised results, and they report a percentage built from a sample. Use them for trend direction. For a small site, the free setup above is enough for the first 6 months.
What mistakes should you avoid?
- Treating one prompt result as your ranking. Run each prompt several times and report ranges.
- Skipping the control. Log prompts for a competitor too, so you can tell a change in your content from a change in the tool.
- Mixing mentions with referrals. Count them separately.
- Chasing AI-only tricks. Google says its AI features use its normal ranking and quality systems, and that pages must be indexed and eligible for snippets. Fix that first (see AI Overviews and AI Mode).
- Believing every tracker’s score. Ask a vendor how it collects data and how many runs per prompt it makes.
- Forgetting that the reports are young. Metrics in the Bing preview and the new Google report can change, so save raw exports.
